Volunteering is a voluntary act of an individual or group freely giving time and labour for community service.
Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Others serve on an as-needed basis using their skills and availability to help others in need.
More than 1 billion people volunteer globally, the majority of them serving in their own countries. Many are in the forefront of efforts to improve the way they and their fellow citizens are governed and engaged.
Volunteerism is a basic expression of human relationships. It is about people’s need to participate in their societies and to feel that they matter to others. We strongly believe that the social relationships intrinsic to volunteer work are critical to individual and community well-being.
The ethos of volunteerism is infused with values such as solidarity, reciprocity, mutual trust, belonging and empowerment, all of which contribute significantly to quality of life.
People around the world engage in volunteerism for a great variety of reasons: to help to eliminate poverty and to improve basic health and education, to provide safe water supply and adequate sanitation, to tackle environmental issues and climate change, to reduce the risk of disasters or to combat social exclusion and violent conflict. In all of these fields, volunteerism makes a specific contribution by generating well-being for people and their communities.
Children of Hope is blessed to be working with a community of over 200 volunteers around the country. Those are ordinary people who have embraced the vision and mission of TKW and want to help us see homeless children rescued from the life on the streets and brought back to their families. We rely on volunteers for a lot of our projects, we need foster families, we need people with computer skills, photographers, filmmakers, graphic designers an so much more.
Rescue andReintegrate Children
An estimated 47,000 children are forced to live and work on the streets of Kenya. Ignored by and invisible to those who should protect them, these children are frequently physically & sexually abused, maltreated, hungry and excluded. Basic survival is a challenge and many turn to crime, substance-abuse and prostitution.
Partner with us and rescue a child. It costs £225 to rescue a child. That will enable us to trace a child’s family, take the child back home and do regular follow up visits, ensuring that children are settling back home in circumstances that are consistent with the provision of safe and effective care. That covers a span of at least two years period until we disengage with the child’s family.
Our goal for 2021 is 120 children leaving the streets each month.
