In our recent student mentorship sessions across the Counties, we did not arrive with grand plans, speeches or textbooks. Instead, we came with a simple mission: to listen and empower young people. We walked through the school gates with open hearts, ready to connect.
The Silent Struggles of Girls and Boys
In quiet corners, the students gathered. The girls, their faces a mix of curiosity and hesitation, sat with the women on our team. Soon, their stories began to flow, revealing the profound challenges they faced. Many spoke of the constant fear of sexual exploitation in their communities. Others shared the struggle of managing their periods without sanitary pads, a reality that often forced them to miss school, falling behind in their studies.
In another class, the boys met with the men from our team. They spoke of a different weight they carried: the heavy burden of child labor. Pulled from their classrooms and into the fields to help their families survive, they felt the immense pressure of being the “men of the house,” shouldering responsibilities far too great for their young shoulders.
The Power of Resilience
As we listened to their candid stories, a common thread emerged. These children, despite their different homes, were united by their struggles. They were the silent carriers of their families’ burdens; the lack of food, broken homes, or the absence of a parent. Yet, through it all, their desire for an education shone brightly.
We saw this hope in the boy who came to school hungry, clinging to the hope of a single meal. We saw it in the girl who wore the same dirty uniform every day because it was all she had. These families, though living on the edge, believed fiercely in the promise of a better future through education.
A Clear Call to Action and Partnership
Our visit to the community was a powerful reminder that true empowerment begins with listening and seeing the incredible resilience that exists within these communities. These needs are simple yet profound and a clear call for action:
*Sanitary towels to help girls stay in school
*Protection from the risk of exploitation
*Support for families struggling to make ends meet, so children can focus on their studies instead of burdens at home and labor
This is a journey we can take together. By offering not just prayers, but practical support, we can help these children realize their dreams.
