HOPE in supporting families with Income Generating Activities
Imagine as a parent having no choice but to let your child loiter in the streets to try to make some money for the family?
Some of the children we have rescued the situation at home has made them believe they can care for themselves better than their family can provide for them.
When we resettle a child back home from the street, we identify and assess Families who are most in need of our support. Over time, we have realised that by empowering a parent or guardian economically, we are enabling them to feed, clothe their children and send them to school. Before we support the family with an Income generating Activities/IGA, we request them to think and research on their business idea. Do they have a dream of how they could make their family sustainable but lack the means to do so? It is important that the family owns the business idea they are embarking on towards a self-sustaining path to economic growth and reducing the burdens they are facing.
Impact
Currently we are working with over 200 families in IGA program mostly mothers. We have supported them with Income generating Activities/small businesses. These mothers were needy and raising their children alone after family separation making them the sole bread winners.
We do not give them loans as this would trap the families in a cycle of debt, but instead we give small start-up capital. This is a form of empowerment to grow their small businesses and for them to use the profits to support their children. We carry out regular follow-ups of each family to offer them advice and guidance on how to stabilize the business.
We do not want to see children coming back to the streets again because there is not enough food and basic needs at home. Over the past few years of supporting these families, it has been impactful, and many families have been restored and become sustainable.
Skill Training
In one of the counties, we organised small-scale bakery training for a group of mothers, and they were very excited to learn more on how to open their pastry businesses.
Goal 2025:
In 2025, Tumaini Kwa Watoto’ goal is to support 450 families through IGAs to address the issues that have led to family to poverty. With availability of funds, our next year goal is to:
- Begin offering training in business basics, financial literacy, and budget planning for most families of these vulnerable children. This will help families to maintain financial stability.
- We also plan to strengthen our partnership with institutions offering vocational training to incorporate other skill training in tailoring, poultry keeping and dairy farming, soap making, artificial charcoal making, hair dressing among others…
