My story, by Marisela
…My name is Marisela, and I am 20 years old. I am the first born in a family of six siblings. My parents separated when I was in grade six and my mother decided to relocate us to another county where she tried her best to nurture us starting from nothing. She took five of us to school, she fed us and paid our school needs from her casual jobs. But this did not last. Her casual jobs were not regular, and we began struggling even with paying rent.
We started missing school sometimes for a month due to fees balances and lack of food in the house. However, we never dropped out of school. With all the challenges, my mother could beg for food from our neighbors so that we could to eat but this was not sustainable.
On day, my mother became ill, and she was diagnosed with a chronic disease. I thought that would be the end for my mother.
As the first born I became like a mother figure for my younger siblings.
When I completed primary school education, I stayed at home for several months before I could enroll into a secondary school. I finally got admitted back to school but life became a real struggle because of my mother’s illness which overwhelmed us and lack of school needs support.
During the 3rd term of second year in high school, my fees arrears had accumulated and my mother was not getting better. She was admitted into hospital and I had to drop out of school to take care of her. A neighbour reported our story to the children officer in our area. This was our turnaround of hope. My mother was supported through medication, my younger siblings were taken to a children’s home and the children officer connected me with Tumaini Kwa Watoto team.
TKW visited my family, assessed my family’s needs and they offered to sponsor my education. My life has never been the same since. There was speed in restoration of all that delayed in my life.
They paid my school fees for the rest of my high school years. TKW remained faithful until I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (K.C.S.E.) I worked hard to catch up with what schoolwork I had missed during my absence from school. I managed to get a grade C plain and later got an opportunity to join Bukura Agricultural College in early 2023.
Today I am pursuing my career in agricultural technology and my family is settled. God has been faithful in my life beyond my imagination!”
Marisela has made us very proud… Through our education program, she has been able to act as a role model for many girls in her community where she comes from as well at the college. She is a leader.
We are empowering children in different Counties in Kenya to break the cycle of poverty by providing education.
