Kabue’s Hope and Determination
Kabue’s world crumbled when his parents separated. Up until then, home and school had been his best, a place where he thrived, his stability shattered when his mother remarried. His mum’s new husband was a harsh man, and Kabue found himself the target of constant mistreatment. Home became a place of fear and misery. Finally, at his wit’s end, Kabue did the only thing he could think of – he ran away.
The streets became his new home. He learned to survive, scavenging for food and shelter, his young heart became hardened by the cold reality of life on the streets.
Tumaini Kwa Watoto team found a lost boy and offered him a lifeline. We listened to his story, to the pain of his parents’ separation, the cruelty of his ‘stepfather’, and the desperate longing for a place to belong. Kabue’s wish was to go to his grandmother. We took him there, hoping for a loving embrace and a safe home. But his grandmother was struggling herself. She simply could not provide the care and support Kabue needed although she loved him.
The disappointment was real and another blow to a young boy who had already endured so much.
Despite the setbacks, Kabue’s spirit was not broken. He had a dream to build a better future for himself. He yearned to learn and gain skills.
He expressed a keen interest in vocational training. We recognized his potential, we stepped in and enrolled him in a vocational training program, nurturing his passion for agriculture.
Last week, a new chapter begun. Kabue, along with other young men, graduated with a certificate in agricultural farm management, irrigation and drainage. He stands on a promising future, his hard work and resilience finally paid off. Kabue who is 18 years old and with this training, he desires to start his own farming and to further his education later.
Remember Hillary and his sisters?
Today we celebrate a great milestone in Diana’s life. Diana together with her 2 siblings had dropped out of school and were at risk as they loitered and worked odd jobs. Their grandmother, the only support, was frail and her spirits dimmed by illness and worry. They relied on well-wishers as their grandmother’s small earnings were barely enough to keep them from starvation. The future stretched before them.
After their rescue and support, Diana worked hard in their studies, joined high school and completed. She was enrolled into a Catering School and poured her heart into her studies. Years later, she stood tall and proud, graduated with a diploma in her hand, an evidence of hard work and the unwavering support she received.
These are journeys of restoration, stories of transformation, written on the faces of a child and family given a second chance. It all begins with a good heart, a helping hand, and the unwavering belief that even in the most desolate of souls, hope can blossom and flourish.
